Abraham Lincoln - President 1861 - 1865
"When I left Springfield [to become President] I asked the people to pray for me. I was not a Christian. When I buried my son, the severest trial of my life, I was not a Christian. But when I went to Gettysburg and saw the graves of thousands of our soldiers, I then and there consecrated myself to Christ."19

From First Inaugural Address 1861:
"Intelligence, patriotism, Christianity, and a firm reliance, are still competent to adjust, in the best way, all our present difficulty"7

From the Emancipation Proclamation 1862:
"I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the Savior [Jesus] of the world is communicated to us through this book."7

How do you define Founding Father?

To me the fouonding fathers are those around 1776 who helped get the Country started.

True, I guess it would be inclusive of what time frame one had in mind. How about, the founding father of the "United" States?

Then I would exclude Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln. They were both great Presidents but not of the time of the founding Fathers.

Whom do you consider as founding fathers? Only the signers of the Constitution?
What about the Mayflower Compact, the Second Treatise of Govenment, the Federalist Papers, the First Virginia Charter, the Virginia Declaration of Rights, the First Thanksgiving Proclamation or the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut?

Surely, they are just as much founders of the United States as the signers of the Constitution.

Are they or are they the Pre-cursors of the Founding fathers? They were involved in establishing the Colonies. The founding fathers were involved in the independance of the Colonies from England.

<Are they or are they the Pre-cursors of the Founding fathers?.........>
I believe that they are both. All had a part to play in the establishment of the United States.

The Virginia Declaration of Rights by James Madison, was borrowed on heavily by Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence. If you will read it, Madison very definately had the opinion of independence, personal freedoms of religion and rights.

The Second Treatise of Civil Government, by John Locke elaborated on the state of Nature, War, Slavery, Property, Paternal Power, Civil Society, Political Societies, Political Government, Legislative, Executive and Federal Power.

------------

The point being, that all of the prior works (that I mentioned) are the foundational basis of our Constitution and Bill of Rights.
